  • Elyce Abrams began these works on paper during a period of personal loss, following the passing of her mother. Needing a focused and repetitive process, she found solace in a calm, concentrated method of working. Painting has always been a stabilizing force in her life, and this structured approach helped her navigate the early, difficult weeks of grief. Sitting at her desk, drawing line after line, allowed her to process her emotions. At times, she was fully immersed in the work and the creative decisions it required, while at other times the repetitive motions became automatic, giving her mind the space to wander and mourn.

  • The meditative process brought her immense comfort, and she grew to love the way the markers flowed onto the paper—their precision, their opacity, and their ability to easily correct mistakes, change colors, and build layers. Over time, as the work developed and the intensity of her grief began to soften, her love for color, pattern, structure, and repetition continued to be a driving force in her pieces, reflecting the emotional journey that shaped them.
