  • Boree Hur is an internationally recognized Korean painter who captures the relationship between objects, particularly flowers, and our perception of them. An expert with colors and organic forms of nature, she aims to highlight the many threads shared between humans and nature.

"In the recent years, I have thought about the resemblance between plants and people and the way plants swarm out of the earth always seems to me like people going to work diligently. Sucking water out of the earth, feeding off the hot sun, and enduring the wind and rain does not seem that much different"

Heekyung Kim builds her brightly colored and beautifully textured relief sculptures from thousands of layers of layered hanji paper, a traditional hand made Korean paper known for its archival properties and soft yet strong qualities. Kim layers and forms sheets of hanji with a binding agent to form expressive and active surfaces that ripple like waves or the petals of a flower.

  • Miguel Vallinas, Naturaleza número 11, 2023
  • BLANK SPACE is proud to present two new series from Miguel Vallinas, 'Blanco' and 'Naturaleza', both on exhibition for the first time. Vallinas’ work explores surrealist impulses and historical references through a very contemporary lens. Key to his work is his incredibly recognizable visual style which isolates the subject in a black void, creating a contrast between the bold color palettes of his subject and the depth of the background. Printed using Lambda digital-c printing, bonded to archival board and sealed with a protective layer of high quality matte resin, the richness of these works compliments the incredible detail and intricacy of Vallinas' creativity.

    Nemo Jantzen

Dutch artist Nemo Jantzen creates his photomosaic portraits by collecting and placing thousands of individual images behind glass domes set in resin. To begin he chooses an image, the portrait, and then begins assembling the piece chromatically with his archival imagery. Each piece has a theme (music, pop culture, or a mood) and all the small images pertain to that theme. Collectively the individual images build the larger portrait however, because they are magnified behind glass domes, when the viewer is close to the piece each image stands out on its own. It is only when standing at a distance, or viewing the piece through a lens, that the resulting portrait is clearly visible.

    Cut Paper Portraits

South Korean artist Yoo Hyun melds different and unexpected techniques to bridge the gap between contemporary and traditional forms of art. Using just a knife and tweezers, Hyun patiently cuts a delicate Korean paper, called hanji, to create uniquely stylized, photorealistic portraits of popular figures. Once he has prepared the portrait, he floats the cutout in front of a single black ink splatter, made with a large traditional calligraphy brush, which creates the contrast necessary to see the portrait.

  • Byungjin Kim

    Byungjin Kim

Byungjin Kim is a master of steel sculpture, crafting elaborate figures and shapes by welding countless letters, logos, and symbols together. His labor-intensive process involves forming each individual piece of steel, sanding and painting the welded areas, and then heating the artwork in a kiln. His 'Love Is' series features the word love constructed in steel, placed on monochrome canvas. Through this series, Kim wishes to convey a message of hope and joy, inspired by the joy his daughter brought into his life.

Randall Stoltzfus embraces a thoughtful and experimental method, crafting unique acrylic dispersion paint by blending his own pigments for vibrant tones. He intricately applies numerous circles, expertly adjusting the paint's density to achieve a harmonious interplay of light and texture, while his art delves into the profound connection between light, collective communion, and a higher essence.

" When I was a child, I won a blue ribbon for a drawing I had done in pastel of a bare tree on a cliff over the sea at sunset.  Some time has passed but that motif seems as relevant as ever today. So I recreated that drawing with the materials and technique I have available two-score and some years later.

This brightly colored orange, yellow, blue, and white painting is a symbolist take on that early theme. I'm thinking about current events, climate change, the general anxiety. And I know we can do better.

This painting is a postcard to the future. We tried. And despite everything, we tried to make it beautiful." - Randall Stolzfus

Light, in myth and in practice, gives life and is the foundation of many aspects of society; agriculture, time, creation mythology, and it has long been the practice of humans to attempt to define this life force through metaphysical means. Hyunsook Jeong uses naturally iridescent materials, mother of pearl and crystal, to capture the eternity of this light on the canvas.
