Gregory Hayes
A passionate artist and educator whose commitment to experimentation and innovation has made him a respected figure in the art world. His unique brushless painting technique and dedication to artistic exploration have secured his place as one of the most exciting contemporary artists of his generation.
Gregory Hayes, born and raised in Colorado, developed a passion for art at a young age, and this passion was further fueled by his studies at the Rocky Mountain College of Art and Design. He later moved to Brooklyn to pursue his MFA at Brooklyn College, which allowed him to refine his unique painting technique. In addition to his own artistic practice, Hayes has also taught at various institutions including the Brooklyn College, Cooper Union, and Rutgers University.
Despite his success, Hayes remains committed to his artistic exploration and continues to push the boundaries of his brushless painting technique. His dedication to experimentation and innovation has made him a respected figure in the art world and has secured his place as one of the most exciting contemporary artists of his generation.
Gregory Hayes is a master of the brushless painting technique, creating abstract works that challenge the viewer's perception and showcase the natural abilities of paint to form shapes and patterns on its own. His dedication to experimentation and innovation has resulted in a dynamic and varied body of work that is both meticulous and intuitive.
Gregory Hayes is known for his methodical and systematic process based on the concept of "brushless" painting. Hayes' abstract works almost seem digitalized or computerized from a distance due to his meticulous technique and mark making. Exposing the paint's natural ability to form shapes and patterns on its own on the surface of the canvas, Hayes uses paint to create a multi-dimensional space and kaleidoscopic like texture that challenges the viewer's perception. His work ranges from the more mathematical Primary Array and Color Array paintings that are built over a ¼ inch grid, to the Amalgamation series that takes a more intuitive and gestural approach to the entirely blank canvas. The result is a dynamic and varied body of work that is tied together through Hayes' impressive and unique technique coupled with an insatiable desire to continue experimenting with the medium.
Gregory Hayesworks and lives in Brooklyn. He has received his BFA in painting at Rocky Mountain College of Art and Design and his MFA at Brooklyn College in 2011. His work has been exhibited in many exhibitions in the United States and art fairs internationally including Boulder Museum of Contemporary Art in Colorado, SCOPE Basel, Museum of Contemporary Art Denver, and was included in both the Millay Colony and Fire Island Pines Arts Project residencies.
