New Moon
Randall Stoltzfus -
"The new moon is a time for beginnings, for picking up the pieces and moving on. That’s what the past months have felt like, and this group of work carries that feeling, too."
-Randall Stoltzfus
BLANK SPACE is pleased to present New Moon, a solo exhibition centered around light, shadows, and memory by the hands of gallery artist Randall Stoltzfus. The show will be live in our viewing room from October 27th through December 1st.

Randall Stoltzfus takes a considered, experimental approach to working with acrylic dispersion paint. He often mixes his own paint from his dry pigment collection to create saturated hues not otherwise available. He also constantly modifies the consistency and density of his paint as he applies countless circles to construct a balance of light and texture. Stoltzfus explores light as a phenomenon, a collective communion, and seeks to illustrate its ability to link us to something greater than ourselves.

"I love that painting is simple technology. Simple enough to fully wrap your arms around as a maker or a viewer interested in how things are made."
In a recent project, Stoltzfus manufactured his own paulownia wood stretcher bars from trees he helped plant as a child. He also reuses stretchers and prefers recycled polymer canvases when possible. Along with the custom mixed paints, these are all ways the artist takes responsibility for the durability and environmental consequence of his work.

Watercolor and Gold Leaf on Paper
Stoltzfus also paints landscapes in watercolor that center a simple version of his emblematic circle motif, this time as floating over bodies of water. In this new series of watercolors from 2022, he includes the gold and palladium leaf he uses in some of his work on canvas.
