Congeries of Time Photographs and Paintings: Seung Won Yun

November 16 - December 11, 2016
Overview

BLANK SPACE is pleased to present “Congeries of Time” the first solo exhibition of works by Sung Won Yun at the gallery. The show will open on Wednesday, November 16 and continue through December 11, 2016. This exhibition is Yun’s first solo exhibition at BLANK SPACE Gallery, and will juxtapose her recent landscape photographs and mixed media painting series.

Yun raises fundamental questions about homogenization of cultural, ecological, or geological process in the congeries of time. For Yun, serenity is achieved when separate time sequences that shape unique experiences homogenize to form one continuous flow, such phenomenon realized in the form of one’s memory. This accumulation of instances Yun calls ‘congeries of time’, whose embodiment ultimately becomes irrelevant of time as a measurement.

In her paintings, Yun uses graphite, ink, watercolor and acrylic to layer organic shapes and lines. Inspiration of her paintings comes from observations of biological details, specifically in the growth of plants. Development of roots, stems and leaves demonstrate the process of life, and biological transformations are reinterpreted in her vibrant paintings through the abstraction of organic shapes from her studies.

In her photographs, Yun expresses the majesty of fjords, glaciers, and permafrost captured during her travels to Iceland and Norway. While visual composition and image of nature’s transformation suggest temporal dynamism and the passage of time, the stillness captured in the moment presents serenity and timelessness that evokes awe and the power of nature.
